Romantic Masterworks
by Schumann, Liszt, Mendelssohn, Chopin and Kreisler

The Amati Music Festival™ celebrates its 13th Season with an evening of Romantic masterworks performed by guest artists and faculty from some of the most venerable conservatories in the world.

Robert Schumann, Franz Liszt, Felix Mendelssohn, Frédéric Chopin were contemporaries and friends, born in the early 1800’s. Together, their musical contributions helped to define the “Romantic” period of western classical music.  Fritz Kreisler was born a half century later, but he greatly admired the Romantic masters, performing their works, and on occasion, presenting his own works in the Romantic style. This evening's Amati Music Festival 2012 program pays tribute to these great masters of the Romantic period.

Robert Schumann (June 8, 1810 – July 29, 1856)

Ahnung

Robert Schumann’s Ahnung (Premonition) is a short, one-page work discovered in 2009 at the Leopold Sophien Library in Überlingen, Germany. This previously unknown manuscript of an albumleaf for piano characteristic of the composer, whose main theme was also used in one of his Novelleten no. 5, op. 21 in the same key as Ahnung) had been given to a friend of the Schumann’s by his wife, Clara. Its simplicity and lyricism evoke the expressive nature of Schumann’s own Kinderszenen, and could have also possibly been one of the 30 short pieces he considered for publication under that opus, the idea later discarded by the composer. Given the recent discovery of this beautiful small gem by one of the great Romantic composers of the 19th century, it gives me great pleasure to perform it once again in the historical setting of Steinway Hall in New York City.
